Moto GP for dummies

MotoGP is one of the most exciting motorsport competitions in the world. If you're new to this thrilling universe and want to learn more about the discipline, we're here to explain the basics of MotoGP. Shapeheart presents to you "The Unofficial Guide to MotoGP".

    Moto GP in 5 steps:

    step 1

    Understanding the categories

MotoGP consists of several categories, but the most prestigious and top-tier category is called MotoGP. In this category, the bikes reach incredible speeds, and the riders are experts in their field. There is also Moto2 and Moto3, the second and third divisions, which are considered training schools for young talents. Each category uses specific machines, offering different levels of power and speed.

    step 2

Knowing the riders and the teams

Each Moto GP team usually has two riders. Considered top athletes, these riders are often globally recognized for their skills, charisma, and, most importantly, their ability to create an exciting spectacle for fans. They represent not only their team but also their country and their supporters. Teams play a crucial role in preparing the bikes, including vehicle mechanics and maintenance, as well as race strategies and support for the riders.

MotoGP is an international sport that attracts athletes from all over the world, but there are a few countries that stand out thanks to their exceptional riders and influence in the field:

    • Spain is undoubtedly one of the most dominant nations in MotoGP, with a generation of talented riders like Marc Márquez, Jorge Lorenzo, and Maverick Viñales.
    • Italy also has a long history of success with legends like Valentino Rossi (see the picture) and Giacomo Agostini.
    • Australia is also ranked as one of the top nations globally with Casey Stoner and Jack Miller.
    • On the French side, there's a solid track record built over the years, notably with Fabio Quartararo, crowned world champion in 2021, and Johann Zarco.

    step 3

    The qualification system.

The MotoGP season runs on a schedule of 2 to 5 races per month, with races held on various circuits around the world. Each race weekend includes free practice sessions, qualifying sessions, and the race itself.

Riders qualify based on their times during the qualifying sessions to determine their starting position on the grid.

    step 4

The points system and the championship.

Riders accumulate points throughout the season based on their finishing position in each race. The points system awards more points to riders who finish in the TOP 3 of each race.

The world champion, crowned at the end of the regular season, is the rider who has accumulated the most points throughout the year. A winner is designated for each category.

    Strategies and challenges

MotoGP is much more than just high-speed racing. Riders must also manage their bike, tires, and fuel throughout the race. It’s a demanding responsibility that requires seriousness and a strong mindset.

Strategies are essential for making decisions on the track, such as when to switch bikes in the event of rain or choosing the right tires based on track conditions. Overtaking is frequent but requires great skill and training, as it can be extremely dangerous for the riders.
