Getting Back into Running in Autumn:

Stay  Motivated Despite the Cold

In this article, we share our 5 essential tips for getting back into running in autumn, staying motivated, and enjoying the seasonal scenery despite the cold.

Don’t let the weather bring you down; a hot chocolate by the fireplace is all the more enjoyable after a good workout!

    Tip 1

    Set Realistic Goals

One of the keys to staying motivated is to set simple and achievable goals. No need to aim for a marathon if you haven’t run in weeks or even months! Start with short sessions (20 minutes is great already), then gradually increase the duration and intensity.

Setting small goals is the key to staying on track without feeling overwhelmed by a distant objective.

    Tip 2

    Invest in the Right Gear

For autumn running, having the right clothing makes all the difference.

Choose lightweight and breathable layers that keep you warm without overheating. A waterproof jacket is essential for rainy days, and don’t forget accessories like gloves or a beanie.

If you’re running in the evening, secure your autumn runs with visible and darkness-ready gear.

And of course, a good phone mount like the Shapeheart is essential for listening to your best motivational playlists while keeping your hands free.

    Tip 3

Join a Running Group: Motivation is Contagious!

Joining a running group is a great way to keep pace and not give up, even when the weather isn’t favorable.

Whether with friends or through apps, knowing others are counting on you will give you the energy to lace up, even in cold weather.

    Our Favorite Apps:

    OuiRun
    Strava

OuiRun: This 100% community-based running app allows you to meet runners near you to organize or join group runs.

We’re sharing an article from the Je vais Courir blog about the OuiRun app for more information.

You probably already know Strava; it’s a great app for motivation and tracking your performance.

It has a motivating and social aspect, as you can like and comment on your friends' activities.

    Tip 4

    Enjoy the Autumn Scenery

Running in autumn is also a chance to rediscover routes around your area. Colors change, and streets/trails are often quieter, making it the perfect opportunity to explore new paths and enjoy the seasonal changes.

A good playlist to add that “main character” vibe, and nothing will stop you.

    Tip 5

Adapt Your Sessions to Daylight Hours

With shorter days, it becomes more challenging to run in the morning or late afternoon. Consider adjusting your running schedule to daylight hours to avoid poorly lit areas. If you need to run in the dark, make sure you’re visible with reflective gear and/or a headlamp.

    Our suggestion:

Plan a 30-minute run on Sunday morning (yes, we said motivation!) and a 20-minute run as soon as you get home from work.

PRO tip: If you can change into your workout gear before leaving work, it will be less tempting to flop onto the couch when you get home.

Getting back into running in autumn can be a real challenge, but with these few tips, you’ll stay motivated and fit throughout the season.

So, lace up your sneakers, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy everything autumn has to offer. You’ll see, once you’re well-equipped and prepared, you won’t want to stop!
