The Tour de France for dummies!

It's been over a week since the Tour de France began, but you're feeling left behind? Can't keep up with your friends? Don't worry, we've got you covered.

We can't promise to turn you into an expert, but we can at least give you a helping hand. So here's the basics on the Tour de France.

The Tour de France in 5 stages:

    step 1

    The basics

The Tour de France is the world's most prestigious cycling race. It is spread over three weeks, and includes a total of 21 stages.

The objective for winning the Tour is clear: to be the rider who completes all the stages in the shortest possible time.
The race features 22 teams, each made up of 8 cyclists (each with a well-defined role).

    step 2

    The different stages

Each stage is an adventure in itself, with mountains, plains and thrilling descents.

. High mountain stages are characterized by the presence of at least two passes. These are the most physically and mentally demanding stages, often decisive for the overall classification. It's on these days that the riders can be seen laboriously climbing kilometers and kilometers of near-vertical climbs, in small, scattered groups.

. The time trials, which are also crucial, differ from the other stages in that the riders start individually. Each participant is timed, and the fastest time wins the race.

. The only distinction between flat and hilly stages lies in the route: if the course is mainly flat, it's called a flat stage, while if it includes a few difficulties (e.g. cobbles), it's called a hilly stage.

    The different jerseys

. The yellow jersey is the symbol of the Tour de France. It is worn by the rider leading the overall classification. To wear this coveted jersey, you have to be the best performer on all the stages. It's every rider's dream to wear this emblematic jersey.

. The Green Jersey is worn by the rider leading the points classification. Points are awarded at the finish of each stage and at intermediate sprints. This is why the Green Jersey is generally awarded to the best sprinter.

. The polka-dot jersey is worn by the rider leading the best climber classification. The "mountain points" are awarded on the summits of the passes and vary according to the category of the pass.

. The white jersey is worn by the leader of the best young rider classification (maximum age 25).

2023 Tour recap: a duel at the summit

This year, among the main riders to remember, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma team), the outgoing winner, will be putting his title back on the line.

He will be up against two-time winner of the Grande Boucle: Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), for a duel at the summit.

    And the French?

Fourth in 2022, David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ team) is certainly France's best chance of a good overall result.

Also worth mentioning is Romain Bardet (DSM team), a monster of consistency on the Tour de France. Second in 2016 and third in 2017, he has finished six of his eight Grandes Boucles in the top 10.

For the last Tour de France of his career, Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ team) is not expected to get involved in the fight for the overall classification. His objective is simple: try to claim the fourth Tour stage victory of his career.
